The Final Countdown

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Final Countdown is the third studio album by the Swedish rock band Europe and was released on 26 May 1986 on Epic Records. It is the first album with keyboard player Mic Michaeli and drummer Ian Haugland. Producer Kevin Elson worked with the band in Zürich, and later recording also took place in Stockholm, Atlanta and Berkeley. The title song goes back to an old keyboard riff by singer Joey Tempest, and the lyrics were inspired by David Bowie's Space Oddity. Michaeli layered two synthesizers on top of each other for that striking sound.

The band had meant the song as an opener for concerts. When the record company proposed it as the first single, it reached number one in twenty-five countries. Carrie, a power ballad that came out of a jam session, also did well. Reviews were mixed.
