Baduizm

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Baduizm is Erykah Badu's debut, released in 1997. She left her studies at Grambling State University to focus on music, toured with her cousin and recorded a nineteen-track demo, Country Cousins. That led her to Kedar Massenburg, who arranged a duet with D'Angelo and signed her to Universal. Recording ran from January to October 1996, in New York, Philadelphia and Dallas. Just before the release she was dissatisfied and worked in Philadelphia with The Roots, which produced Otherside of the Game and Sometimes.

The album mixes soul and jazz with hip hop beats. Critics saw in it the simplicity of early-1970s soul and compared her singing with that of Billie Holiday. On & On, the first single, became a hit. The record won a Grammy for Best R&B Album and contributed to the visibility of neo soul.
