Brain Salad Surgery
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
After the tour for Trilogy, Emerson, Lake & Palmer founded their own record label Manticore in 1973 and converted an old cinema in Fulham into a rehearsal space. Brain Salad Surgery was recorded in London from June to September 1973 and released on 7 December. Greg Lake produced, and the cover is by H. R. Giger. The trio wanted a record they could also play live, unlike Trilogy with its many overdubs.
The longest piece is Karn Evil 9, almost thirty minutes in three parts, written by Keith Emerson, with lyrics by Lake and Pete Sinfield, about the struggle between artificial and natural intelligence. Toccata is an adaptation of Ginastera, who gave his approval. Still...You Turn Me On, written by Lake alone, forms the quiet counterweight. The first reactions were mixed, later appraisals more favourable.
