Figure 8

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Figure 8 · This fifth album by Elliott Smith was released on 18 April 2000 and was his second on a major label, DreamWorks. Recording ran from 1998 to 2000 and took place in several studios, including Sunset Sound in Hollywood and Abbey Road in London. At first the record was to be called Place Pigalle. Of the eventual title Smith said that he liked the image of a skater in an endless, winding circle: it is not about arriving, but about making something as beautiful as possible.

He described the songs as more fragmented and dreamy. The lyrics refer to, among others, the serial killer David Berkowitz, the Hindu god Shiva and the actor Bruno Schleinstein. Happiness and Son of Sam preceded the album as singles. Critics described the sound as layered power pop with intimate ballads. The album received much praise, although some reviewers found it weaker than XO. It remained his last album in his lifetime.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Happiness and notice the unusually cheerful energy in the production for a writer who often sounds restrained.
