On the Third Day

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

On the Third Day is Electric Light Orchestra's third album and the first without Roy Wood. It was released in November 1973 in America and on 14 December 1973 in England. From this record onwards the word The disappeared from the band's name. The four tracks on the first side run into one another as one continuous suite, and the songs are shorter than on the previous record. The second side was recorded during or shortly after the sessions for ELO 2.

Violinist Mik Kaminski made his debut on the first side, replacing Wilfred Gibson. Marc Bolan plays as a second lead guitarist. The album did not chart in England but reached number 52 in America. The American cover was a photograph by Richard Avedon in which the band members show their navels.

Listening tip. Listen to Ma-Ma-Ma Belle for the guitar of guest musician Marc Bolan, who plays here as second lead guitarist.
