The Colours of Chloë

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Colours of Chloë is the debut of the German double bassist and composer Eberhard Weber. He recorded the album in December 1973 and it was released a year later on ECM. On the record Weber plays not only bass but also cello, ocarina and voice. He works with the pianist and synthesizer player Rainer Brüninghaus, drummer Peter Giger, flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen, singer Gisela Schäuble and the cellos of the Südfunk Orchestra of Stuttgart.

AllMusic calls the album Weber's best-known and most influential work, an ambitious piece of symphonic jazz that helped define the ECM sound: painterly, romantic, at times rhythmically animated and at times minimalist. Opinions differ on whether the record has stood the test of time, but Weber's aesthetic played an important role in the creative music of the 1970s and attracted many followers.
