The Hurdy Gurdy Man

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Hurdy Gurdy Man · The sixth studio album by the Scottish singer and writer Donovan was released in October 1968 on Epic in North America. In the United Kingdom it did not come out because of a contract dispute. Recording began in January 1968. In February Donovan travelled to Rishikesh in India to learn Transcendental Meditation with the Beatles. There he wrote many new songs. He also taught John Lennon a way of picking the guitar that returns on the Beatles' White Album.

The record is more eclectic than any of his other albums. Jennifer Juniper has strings and flute, A Sunny Day and The River Song sound pastoral, Peregrine and Tangier revolve around drones, and Get Thy Bearings has jazz influences. The title song combines Celtic folk with hard rock and reached the top five in both England and America. John Paul Jones made the arrangement.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hurdy Gurdy Man and notice how the acoustic guitar and the heavy, rocking accompaniment together make one sound.
