Southbound

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Southbound is the second studio album by the American folk musician Doc Watson and was released in 1966. Merle Watson and John Pilla also play guitar on the album, and Russ Savakus plays double bass. After his debut, which consisted mainly of traditional songs, Watson here showed a broader side of himself.

The record mixes traditionals and folk songs with newer material, including a song by Tom Paxton and a song by Mel Tillis and Wayne Walker. There are also original pieces, such as the title song Southbound, written with Merle Watson, and the guitar instrumentals Nothing to It and Nashville Pickin. According to the Allmusic reviewer this was a key album: it showed that Watson could do more than give beautiful interpretations of folk songs. He also wrote strong original work and gave new country songs a compelling twist.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Nashville Pickin and follow only the guitar: how fast and clear is the melody Watson plays?
