Endtroducing.....

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Endtroducing..... is DJ Shadow's debut album, released in 1996 by Mo' Wax. He made it over two years, first in his apartment in California and later in Dan the Automator's studio in San Francisco. His equipment was small: an Akai MPC60 MKII, a turntable and an ADAT recorder. He wanted to make a record consisting entirely of samples from vinyl. He sought them mainly in a record shop in Sacramento and preferably chose obscure records, including jazz, funk and psychedelia.

Shadow cut, repeated and stacked the samples into new songs with widely varying moods and tempos. Building Steam With a Grain of Salt revolves around a repeated piano line, to which new sounds are constantly added. Midnight in a Perfect World and Stem became hits in England. Critics praised the album in 1996 and it is now regarded as one of the best records of the 1990s and a milestone of instrumental hip hop.
