Music for the Masses

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Music for the Masses · After Black Celebration, Depeche Mode entered the studio in late 1986 without the producer Daniel Miller and without Gareth Jones. Alan Wilder took the lead in the production, with David Bascombe as an outside producer who mainly worked as engineer. Recording began at Studio Guillaume Tell near Paris and continued at Konk in London. The band made many new samples in the studio, including with an old grand piano and orchestral drums. There is also more guitar. Martin Gore wrote the basic songs, Wilder worked out the arrangements.

The sound is grand and dramatic, with a lot of reverb. The singer Dave Gahan spoke of electronic metal, and said they had discovered dynamics. Strangelove, Never Let Me Down Again, Behind the Wheel and Little 15 became singles. With his videos, Anton Corbijn defined the group's new look. The record helped the band break through in America, and the tour ended at the Rose Bowl before more than 70,000 fans.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Never Let Me Down Again and notice how the band builds tension and releases it again, with a lot of space and reverb in the sound.
