Cherish

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Cherish · David Cassidy had become famous through the TV series The Partridge Family. The producer Wes Farrell wanted to detach him from that series as a solo star. He therefore recorded an album in the second half of 1971 with almost the same musicians and engineers as on the earlier Partridge Family records, but with a more mature sound and more personal material. Tony Romeo and Adam Miller each wrote three songs, and Kin Vassy supplied the dramatic ballad My First Night Alone Without You. Ricky's Tune was written by the singer himself.

The title song was a cover of a 1966 hit by The Association and became the first solo single. The album was released in early 1972 on Bell Records. In the United States it reached number 15 on the Billboard 200. In the United Kingdom it even reached number 2, and there began a period in which he was one of the biggest teen idols. Later the album received mostly positive reviews.
