American Utopia
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
David Byrne released American Utopia in March 2018, his first solo album since Grown Backwards in 2004. He wrote it together with Brian Eno, who wrote eight of the ten songs and played on four of them. The record belongs to the multimedia project Reasons to Be Cheerful, which offers reasons to remain optimistic despite political tensions and environmental problems. The title comes from a song by Ian Dury. The first single was Everybody's Coming to My House.
The album then grew into a complete theatre project. On tour Byrne stood on an empty stage surrounded by chains, with twelve barefoot musicians in grey suits. They played without cables, with choreography by Annie-B Parson. A Broadway show, a film by Spike Lee and a picture book followed later. The reactions were mostly positive, and it became his first top ten album in the American charts.
