Willy and the Poor Boys
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
In 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival released three albums, and this was the last, only three months after Green River. The band was by now one of the most popular in the world and had played at Woodstock. John Fogerty kept a tight grip on the reins, which caused friction with the other members. Originally the album was to be built around an old jug band called Willy and the Poor Boys. That idea soon disappeared, but it survived in Poorboy Shuffle and on the sleeve.
Fortunate Son is a protest song against the rich who support war without fighting in it themselves. Effigy targets President Nixon. It Came Out of the Sky tells of a farmer who finds a UFO in his field, in the style of Chuck Berry. There are also two songs connected with Lead Belly: Cotton Fields and Midnight Special. In 2020 Rolling Stone placed the album at number 193 of the 500 best.
