As If to Nothing
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
As If to Nothing is the second solo album by the Scottish composer Craig Armstrong. It was released on 19 February 2002. For this album Armstrong worked with many guests from the pop world, including Bono of U2, the band Mogwai, Photek, Evan Dando, David McAlmont and Antye Greie-Fuchs. Singer Steven Lindsay, formerly of The Big Dish, also takes part.
The album blends orchestral music with popular voices and electronics. In Starless II Armstrong uses a sample of Starless by King Crimson. In Stay (Faraway, So Close!) Bono re-sings a song by his own band U2. He recorded that vocal in 2001 during the Elevation Tour. Ruthless Gravity, the opening track, was later used in the 2004 film Layer Cake and in an episode of Top Gear. Finding Beauty was covered by the band Escala.
