St. Louis to Liverpool
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
On 18 October 1963 Chuck Berry was released from prison, where he had spent twenty months. In the meantime new groups had discovered his work. The Beach Boys built Surfin' U.S.A. on Sweet Little Sixteen, the Beatles played Roll Over Beethoven and the Rolling Stones had Carol on their first American album. Chess Records wanted to profit from the British Invasion and made a record with Berry aimed at young buyers: St. Louis to Liverpool, from 1964.
The album contains four of the five hits he had that year: No Particular Place to Go, You Never Can Tell, Promised Land and Little Marie, a sequel to Memphis, Tennessee. It also includes the B-sides of those singles, a B-side from 1960 and another recording of Merry Christmas Baby. There are also two instrumental tracks, including Liverpool Drive. It was Berry's first studio album on the Billboard chart, at number 124. Dave Marsh called it one of the greatest rock 'n' roll records ever.
