All I Really Want to Do
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
All I Really Want to Do was released on 16 August 1965 on Imperial Records and was Cher's first solo album, while she was also having success at Atco as one half of the duo Sonny & Cher. After the hit I Got You Babe, Bono decided to launch his wife as a solo artist too. He produced the record, Harold Battiste wrote the arrangements and the sessions ended in June 1965 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood.
It is largely a covers album with a folky edge, to set it apart from the duo's records. It includes three songs by Bob Dylan, Needles and Pins, which Bono co-wrote, and I Go to Sleep by Ray Davies. The title song was the only single. The idea came from the Byrds, whom she saw perform at Ciro's on the Sunset Strip, and the two versions competed for chart positions. According to AllMusic she sounds young and full of life.
