Mr. Guitar
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Mr. Guitar contains recordings that guitarist Charlie Byrd made in 1960. The album was released in 1962 on Riverside. It had previously come out as Jazz at the Showboat, Vol. 3 on the Offbeat label of Washington Records, but that release had only limited distribution, before Byrd signed with Riverside.
It is a trio record. Byrd plays guitar, Keter Betts bass and Bertell Knox drums. Alongside his own pieces such as Blues for Felix and Funky Flamenco there are songs by Duke Ellington and George and Ira Gershwin. AllMusic gave the album four and a half stars and called it a delightful trio performance with an agile, light atmosphere. It is thus a record on which the guitar does not dominate, but plays lightly and playfully with bass and drums.
