Mingus Ah Um

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Mingus Ah Um · Charles Mingus recorded this album in May 1959 for Columbia, the first he made for that label. It was released in October of that year. The title is a corrupted Latin list: Mingus, Minga, Mingum. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called the record an extended homage to ancestors, and that fits the pieces. Better Git It In Your Soul draws on gospel and preaching, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is a tribute to Lester Young, who died shortly before the recording, and Open Letter to Duke is for Duke Ellington.

Fables of Faubus is named after Governor Orval Faubus of Arkansas, who in 1957 blocked the integration of schools in Little Rock. Columbia refused the political lyrics on the album, so the piece was released as an instrumental. The original LP also contained shortened versions of six of the nine pieces. In 2003 the album was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.

Listening

Listening tip. In Boogie Stop Shuffle, listen to how the boogie bass carries the piece and how the music switches between stop time and shuffle.
