Ask Rufus
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Ask Rufus is the fifth studio album by the funk band Rufus, released in 1977 on ABC Records. The recording was difficult because of tensions between Chaka Khan and drummer Andre Fischer, after she had married Richard Holland. As a result the recording took longer than for earlier albums. It was the last album with Fischer. Keyboardist David Hawk Wolinski joined the band, and former member Dennis Belfield returned to write Everlasting Love together with Wolinski and Kevin Murphy.
The album spent three weeks at the top of the R&B chart and reached number 14 on the pop chart. The singles were At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up), Hollywood and Everlasting Love. Billboard called it the work of a mature artist, while Robert Christgau was less impressed. Erykah Badu later covered Hollywood, and in 2020 Rolling Stone placed the record at number 499 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
