Son con guaguancó
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Son con guaguancó was released in 1966 on Tico Records. It was Celia Cruz's first major solo record in the United States without the Sonora Matancera, the orchestra with which she had earlier made her breakthrough. Al Santiago produced the album. The arrangements were by Bobby Valentin, Charlie Palmieri, Louie Ramirez and Tito Puente. The band was known as the Alegre All Stars.
According to AllMusic the record sounds full of heat and energy, with perhaps the best salsa band ever assembled. The album did not sell as well as later Cruz records, but according to the magazine Songlines it became a decisive door to greater success. It is now regarded as one of the great works of Latin American music. In a 2024 list of the 600 best Latin American albums it stands at number 8, and in 2018 NPR included it in a list of the 150 best albums by women.
