Plays Tenor

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Plays Tenor · In late 1957 alto saxophonist Bud Shank recorded an album for the label Pacific Jazz on which he plays tenor saxophone. He works with a small quartet: Claude Williamson on piano, Don Prell on bass and Chuck Flores on drums. The repertoire consists of well-known standards, including Thou Swell, Tenderly, Over the Rainbow, All the Things You Are and Body and Soul.

Switching to another instrument does not fundamentally change his sound and style. The eight tracks last between just over four and almost eight minutes, so there is plenty of room for soloing. According to the AllMusic reviewer, the tenor does give his lyrical solos more soul and depth.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Body and Soul and notice the tone of the tenor saxophone: does it sound deeper and softer than you would expect from an alto saxophone?
