Nebraska

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Nebraska · After the great success of The River, Bruce Springsteen withdrew in September 1981 to a rented farmhouse in Colts Neck, New Jersey. There he read history and short stories, including Flannery O'Connor, and watched films. In his bedroom he recorded the songs on his own on a four-track recorder. He wanted to re-record them later with the E Street Band, but found those versions less good and released the recordings as they were. The album was released on 30 September 1982.

The sound is bare and sounds like a home recording. The songs tell of workers who fail again and again, and sometimes a perpetrator speaks, such as the murderer Charles Starkweather in the title song. Critics praised the bold choice and the personal tone. Later Nebraska came to be seen as one of the first home recordings by a major artist and had great influence on indie rock.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the title track Nebraska. Notice how little there is to hear: just a voice and a guitar, which brings the murderer's story close.
