Scenes in the City
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Scenes in the City, from 1984, was saxophonist Branford Marsalis's first album under his own name. In 1982 he had already recorded Fathers and Sons, together with his father and brothers. Thomas Mowrey produced the record. Bassist Ron Carter plays on three tracks and the line-up closely resembles that of his brother Wynton's albums from the same period. Marsalis wrote three pieces himself, and the pianists Mulgrew Miller and Kenny Kirkland contributed one each. The title piece was composed twenty years earlier by Charles Mingus.
The album received four out of four stars in The Penguin Guide to Jazz and is included in that book's list of the thousand best jazz albums, as the only Marsalis record. Scott Yanow called it ambitious and consistently successful, an impressive start to a remarkable career.
