Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi was released on 18 August 1986 on Mercury Records (in North America) and Vertigo Records (elsewhere). The album was recorded from January to July 1986 at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver. Bruce Fairbairn produced, and Bob Rock was the engineer and mixed it. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote most of it themselves. 'You Give Love a Bad Name', 'Livin' on a Prayer', 'Without Love' and 'I'd Die for You' they wrote together with Desmond Child.

It is hard rock with choruses built for a big arena. 'You Give Love a Bad Name' and 'Livin' on a Prayer' reached number 1 on the American Billboard Hot 100, and 'Wanted Dead or Alive' number 7. The album spent eight weeks at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and, according to Billboard, was the bestselling album of 1987. The cover shows a wet black bin bag with the title drawn into it.
