Survival
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Survival is the eleventh album by Bob Marley and the Wailers and was released in 1979. Its theme is markedly militant. Some critics think this was partly due to the criticism of the relaxed mood of the previous record, Kaya. The title was at first going to be Black Survival, but it was shortened to avoid misunderstandings. Neville Garrick designed the sleeve with 48 African flags and an image of the slave ship Brookes in the background.
In Africa Unite, Marley calls for Pan-African solidarity. Zimbabwe is a hymn to what was then still white-ruled Rhodesia and was played at the Zimbabwe independence celebrations in 1980. In South Africa the album was partly censored because of apartheid. The group produced the record themselves, together with Alex Sadkin.
