The Times They Are A‐Changin’

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Times They Are A‐Changin’ · For his third album Bob Dylan wrote all the songs himself. His first two records also contained covers. Recording began in August 1963 in Columbia's Studio A in New York, with Tom Wilson as producer. After a two-month break, sessions followed in October, and Restless Farewell came last, on 31 October. The record was released in February 1964.

The songs are sparse in design and deal with racism, poverty and social change. He wrote the title song deliberately as a song with a purpose. Ballad of Hollis Brown tells a grim story about a poor farmer in South Dakota, and Only a Pawn in Their Game refers to the murder of Medgar Evers. Critics found the record less varied and less humorous than his previous work. Even so it reached number 20 on the American chart and later number 4 in the United Kingdom.
