Blonde on Blonde

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Blonde on Blonde · In October 1965 Bob Dylan began work in New York on his seventh album, with his backing band the Hawks. Months of sessions yielded almost nothing, apart from One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later). At the suggestion of producer Bob Johnston, the recording moved to Nashville, where in February and March, together with Al Kooper and Robbie Robertson and a group of top session musicians, he recorded all the other songs.

Blonde on Blonde completed a trilogy of rock albums, after Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited. It was released as a double album, one of the first in rock. The music sounds grand; one critic described the lyrics as a mixture of the visionary and the everyday. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 and I Want You became hits. Just Like a Woman and Visions of Johanna are regarded as his finest compositions. Critics often count the album among the best of all time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the lyrics in Visions of Johanna, which are long and vivid, and to how subdued the band plays beneath them.
