Have Guitar, Will Travel

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Have Guitar, Will Travel by Bo Diddley was released in January 1960 on Checker Records in Chicago. It is his third album. The recordings were made in Chicago between 1955 and 1959, so the record collects work from several sessions. Leonard Chess, Phil Chess and Bo Diddley himself produced. Among those playing on the record are Jerome Green (maracas and vocals), Peggy Jones (guitar), Willie Dixon (bass) and Clifton James (drums).

The cover shows a white business card, modelled on the card of Paladin in the television series Have Gun – Will Travel. 'Cops and Robbers' had already been released as a single in November 1956 and was originally recorded by Boogaloo and his Gallant Crew. The Rolling Stones and George Thorogood later covered it. 'Say Man, Back Again' was released as a single in November 1959 and reached number 23 on the R&B chart. On 'Spanish Guitar' Lester Davenport plays harmonica.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to 'Say Man, Back Again'. Bo Diddley and Jerome Green sing the song together and take turns talking, over a track that reached the R&B chart in 1959.
