Damaged

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Damaged was the debut album of the hardcore punk band and was released in November 1981 on SST Records. Earlier attempts to record an album had failed with three different singers. Now the twenty-year-old Henry Rollins sang, who had only been in the band for a few weeks. The group first recorded the instruments, after which Rollins put his vocals over the top. Recording took place at Unicorn Studios in West Hollywood. The last track, Damaged I, was his first writing credit.

As well as the lyrics, the record company stood in the way: MCA refused to distribute the record because its boss considered it an anti-parent record. A lawsuit followed that kept the band occupied for almost two years. Critics and the public largely ignored the album on release. It was later recognised as one of the most influential punk records ever, and the sleeve, with Rollins's fist through a mirror, became famous.

Listening tip. Listen to TV Party and notice the singing of the whole band in the chorus. Also hear how the joke in the song fits the fast tempo of the record.
