Radio City

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In late 1972, after the debut #1 Record, founder Chris Bell left the group and the band lay idle for four months. Alex Chilton then finished part of the recordings with drummer Richard Rosebrough and sometimes bassist Danny Jones. After a performance at the Rock Writers Convention in 1973, the band went back into the studio. Radio City was recorded in late 1973 at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Bell had co-written O My Soul and Back of a Car, but was not on the credits.

The record came out in February 1974 and was praised by critics. Even so, sales stalled at about 20,000 copies, because distribution ground to a halt through a quarrel between Stax and Columbia. September Gurls and Back of a Car are among the band's best-known songs. Over the years its reputation grew, and the record is now regarded as a milestone of power pop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to September Gurls and notice how the song is catchy and yet sounds slightly askew, exactly the combination critics wrote about.
