Lenox Avenue Breakdown
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Lenox Avenue Breakdown was released in 1979 on Columbia Records and reached the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. The line-up is striking: besides the alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe, James Newton plays flute, Bob Stewart tuba, James Blood Ulmer guitar, Cecil McBee bass, Jack DeJohnette drums and Guillermo Franco percussion. Bob Thiele was the producer. According to AllMusic, the group sounds like a band that has played together for years, although the musicians rehearsed for only a week.
The record contains four long tracks, all by the saxophonist himself. Stewart's tuba is a striking voice in the title piece. The album was long unavailable until the 1998 CD. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called it one of the lost masterpieces of modern jazz, and AllMusic ranks it among the three best records in his catalogue.
