Favourite Worst Nightmare
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Favourite Worst Nightmare · This second album was recorded quickly at Miloco Studios in East London, with producers James Ford and Mike Crossey. The band wanted to get back on tour and half of the songs had already been played live. Bassist Andy Nicholson had left shortly after the debut; Nick O'Malley took his place. The album sounds more ambitious than Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not: faster, harder and with a fierce production, with ambient sounds and more elaborate drum rhythms. The band had by now travelled the world, and you can hear it.
Brianstorm opened as the first single, and Fluorescent Adolescent also became a hit. The organ at the beginning of the closing track 505 refers to Ennio Morricone's music for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Critics praised the emotional depth and the more mature lyrics of Alex Turner. The album won a Brit Award and is regarded as the beginning of the change of sound that the band carried through on every subsequent album.
