Songs from the Victorious City

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Songs from the Victorious City · Anne Dudley and Jaz Coleman wrote this 1990 album together. They recorded it in Cairo and London. The title refers to Cairo itself: the Arabic name of the city literally means the Victorious. The album falls under world music.

Dudley played keyboards, Coleman violin, cobra flute and transverse flute. In addition, musicians played instruments such as the qanun, the kawala, the nay and the accordion. Hossam Ramzy provided the percussion, and a string orchestra, the Cairo Strings, was conducted by Tareq Aakef. Western keyboards thus mingle with the sounds of the city after which the record is named. The album was later used as a source: in 1993 Enigma sampled extensively from it for two songs.
