Green Is Blues

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Green Is Blues is the second studio album by the American singer and songwriter Al Green. Hi Records released it on 15 April 1969, two days after his twenty-third birthday. His debut Back Up Train had received a lukewarm reception in 1967. Among critics and fans, this album is regarded as his breakthrough.

For the first time he worked with Willie Mitchell, the main producer of the record. Joe Cuoghi, co-founder and president of Hi Records, supervised the sessions. The repertoire contains many covers, from My Girl and The Letter to Get Back by Lennon and McCartney. A connoisseur later wrote that the record ushered the Memphis Sound into a new era, thanks to the tight arrangements of the Hi Rhythm Section. It was the start of a studio partnership between the singer and Mitchell.

Listening tip. Listen to Get Back, a song by Lennon and McCartney, and notice how the vocals and the band turn it into a soul song.
