Sutartinės

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Sutartinės · In Aukštaitija, in the north-east of Lithuania, women sang sutartinės even before the Christianisation of the country, named after the verb sutarti: ‘to agree’. Two or three female singers sing short melodies that constantly cross one another, often in a tight canon. Where the voices clash, seconds are heard, which are regarded here as pleasing. The texts are about work, weddings and the seasons. UNESCO recognised this centuries-old tradition in 2010.

Listening

Listening tip. The trio Trys Keturiose sings a sutartinė about a little bee and clover. Try to follow one voice and hear how the others rub over and against it. How often do you hear two voices right next to each other?
