Trys Keturiose

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Trys Keturiose is a Lithuanian women's trio that sings sutartinės, an ancient singing tradition from Lithuania. The album Bitela was released in 2017. The group does not sing in the village but as a modern ensemble that brings the tradition back to life.

Music and breakthrough

Sutartinės are polyphonic songs with an open, clear style of singing. The voices sound sharp and bright and move close against one another. This way of singing belongs to the rural tradition of Central and Eastern Europe, where loud singing outdoors, during work and at rituals played a major role. Trys Keturiose is mentioned in the literature as one of the best-known contemporary groups continuing this style.

Influence

For pop history, a group like this matters because it shows that singing of a very different kind from Western pop singing is still alive. Such voices and harmonies are a source of inspiration for musicians who look to folk music for something new.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Bitełė siaubia in balta dobila and notice how the voices wind around one another. Do you hear a lead melody, or do all the voices carry equal weight as they interweave?
