Rebetiko
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Rebetiko is the music of the Greek port districts, above all Piraeus near Athens. After 1922, more than a million Greek refugees came to Greece from Asia Minor, present-day Turkey, bringing their café music full of Eastern scales. In the 1930s, Markos Vamvakaris made the bouzouki, a long-necked lute, the principal instrument. The songs are about poverty, love, prison and hashish. After the war, Vassilis Tsitsanis made rebetiko popular throughout Greece.
Listening
Listening tip. In Frangosyriani, hear the clear, plucked bouzouki and the calm dance rhythm of the hasapiko, an old Greek dance.
