Roza Eskenazi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Roza Eskenazi was born around 1895 into a Sephardic Jewish family in Constantinople. She made her first recordings in 1929 and became the queen of rebetiko, with songs in the Smyrna style, full of Turkish and Greek melodies. During the German occupation she helped resistance fighters and Jews to go into hiding. In the 1970s she was rediscovered and inspired singers such as Haris Alexiou.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ouzo Hasis from 1934: violin and santouri play together with her voice, which circles freely and playfully around the melody.
