Pansori

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Pansori is Korean narrative singing by a single singer, the sorikkun, with only a drummer, the gosu, beside them. It arose in the seventeenth or eighteenth century in the southwest of Korea, and a complete story can last for hours. The singer narrates, sings and plays all the roles with a raw, hoarse voice, while the drummer and the audience call out encouraging cries, chuimsae. Of the original twelve stories, five remain, including Chunhyangga.

Listening

Listening tip. In this farewell scene from Chunhyangga, listen to how Eun Hee-jin sings with a hoarse, powerful voice and how the drum sparingly marks the beat.
