Ahn Sook-sun
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Ahn Sook-sun from Namwon learned pansori from her aunt and, as a teenager, already knew the five classic stories, each of which lasts hours. In pansori a single singer sings, narrates and acts out an entire story, with only a drummer beside them. From the age of 31 she sang in the national changgeuk company, and in 1998 she performed at the Avignon festival. In Korea she is honoured as a living national treasure.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to the excerpt from Simcheongga: her voice is hoarse and powerful, and the drummer encourages her with short exclamations.
