Joik

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Joik · According to the Sámi, a joik is not a song about someone, but a way of evoking a person, animal or landscape with the voice. Many Sámi had a personal joik of their own. In 1673 Johannes Schefferus was the first to record a joik, but the tradition is centuries old. Missionaries called joiking sinful, and as late as the 1950s it was forbidden in schools. Since Nils-Aslak Valkeapää's record of 1968, the joik has also been heard in pop and jazz.

Listening

Listening tip. On this album by Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, a joik for Nils Juhán sounds, surrounded by saxophone and electronic sounds. Listen to how the voice repeats a short motif and varies it slightly. Does the melody have a clear beginning and end, or does it circle round?
