Native American music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Native American music · Among the Indigenous peoples of North America, music is centuries old and interwoven with prayer, healing, hunting and dance. On the Great Plains, a group of singers sits in a circle around one large drum; the lead singer begins a song and the others take it up. In the late nineteenth century, when the American government was taking land and banning ceremonies, the powwow grew out of the Grass Dance and other traditions, a gathering where peoples sing and dance together.
Listening
Listening tip. In this Grass Dance song, listen to how the lead singer begins the first line alone, how the group repeats it and how the drum carries on in a tight, even beat.
