The Dave Clark Five

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The Dave Clark Five, also known as the DC5, were an English rock 'n' roll band from Tottenham in London. The group began in 1958 as the backing band of singer Stan Saxon and carried on as an independent group in 1962. The regular line-up consisted of drummer Dave Clark, bassist Rick Huxley, lead guitarist Lenny Davidson, saxophonist Denis Payton and keyboardist and singer Mike Smith. Clark was leader, producer, manager and co-writer, and made sure he kept hold of the master tapes.

Music and breakthrough

The group was promoted as the Tottenham Sound, an answer to the Mersey Beat from Liverpool. That sound was loud and driving, with Clark's hard drumming, Payton's saxophone and Smith's rough voice. In January 1964 Glad All Over reached the top of the British chart, knocking I Want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles off the top spot. Other hits were Bits and Pieces, Can't You See That She's Mine, Catch Us If You Can and Everybody Knows. In the United States their version of Over and Over by Bobby Day reached number one in December 1965. After the Beatles they were the second group of the British Invasion to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, on which they performed eighteen times. In 1965 they starred in the film Catch Us If You Can, directed by John Boorman.

Influence

With the exception of a few songs, the group did not follow the psychedelic trend. In the United States their popularity faded around 1967, and in 1970 they split up. In 2008 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were among the commercially most successful bands of the British Invasion, and showed that English beat music did not have to come from Liverpool alone.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Glad All Over by The Dave Clark Five. Notice the heavy, stomping drums of Dave Clark and the rough singing of Mike Smith.
