The Age of Love
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The Age of Love is the name of an Italian-Belgian duo and of their song of the same name, which is regarded as one of the first popular examples of trance. It appeared in 1990 as a single on the Belgian label DiKi Records. The song was written by Bruno Sanchioni and Giuseppe Chierchia and produced by Sanchioni and the label boss Roger Samyn, in the studio in Mouscron in Belgium. Sanchioni was working on an instrumental demo and felt that it needed a sample, preferably sung by a woman.
Music and breakthrough
The spoken English lines Come on, dance with me were recorded by the French dancer Valérie Honoré. For years her name was unknown, and some sites attributed the voice to Karen Mulder. Only in 2021 was she credited on vinyl reissues. In the original versions there is also a rough male rap by Chierchia, which is absent from the remixes.
Influence
The best known is the 1992 remix by the German duo Jam and Spoon, subtitled Watch Out for Stella Remix. The song continues to be remixed and to appear on compilations to this day, and the latest remix, by Vini Vici and Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, came out in 2022. In this way The Age of Love is an example of how a club track with repeating synthesizer lines, a pounding beat and a short female voice keeps reaching new generations.
