Staatsorchester Stuttgart

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The Staatsorchester Stuttgart, in full the Württembergisches Staatsorchester, is a German symphony orchestra from Stuttgart. It is based at the Staatstheater Stuttgart, where it plays for productions of the Staatsoper and for the Stuttgart Ballet. In addition it regularly gives concerts in the Beethovensaal of the Liederhalle. Its roots lie in the Württembergische Hofkapelle, the court orchestra of the duchy. In 2018 the orchestra celebrated its four hundred and fiftieth anniversary.

Music and breakthrough

In the twentieth century well-known conductors stood at its head. Fritz Busch led the orchestra from 1918 to 1922, Ferdinand Leitner from 1947 to 1969 and Dennis Russell Davies from 1980 to 1987. Later music directors included Lothar Zagrosek, Manfred Honeck and Sylvain Cambreling. Since 2018 Cornelius Meister has been Generalmusikdirektor. In 2002 the magazine Opernwelt chose the ensemble as orchestra of the year.

Influence

The recordings show how broad the repertoire is, from opera to ballet and concert music. The list includes Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen, Schönberg's Moses und Aron, Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis, and newer works such as Akhnaten by Philip Glass and Tabula Rasa. It is a typical opera orchestra of a German city, which lives mostly below stage level in the theatre and carries the music of the performances there.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to an excerpt from this orchestra's Ring project, for example Das Rheingold. Notice how the orchestra builds the atmosphere without singers, with low strings and brass carrying the action.
