Shigeru Umebayashi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Shigeru Umebayashi (born 1951) first played in a Japanese rock band and then turned to writing film music. He became internationally known through Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love (2000). Its best-known piece, Yumeji's Theme, was originally written for the Japanese film Yumeji (1991) by Seijun Suzuki. It is a slow waltz for strings with pizzicato accompaniment, which Wong Kar-wai repeats again and again over slow-motion images. For 2046 (2004) Umebayashi wrote a large part of the music. With Zhang Yimou he made Shi mian mai fu (2004). His style is melodic, melancholic and close to European Romanticism.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the three-beat rhythm of the waltz and to the way the cello plays the melody, singing and with plenty of rubato.
