Sabine Devieilhe

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Sabine Devieilhe was born in 1985 in Ifs, near Caen, into a family without professional musicians. She is a French coloratura soprano, known for her interpretations of Mozart, Baroque music and nineteenth-century opera. Critics often see her as the successor to Natalie Dessay. She began at the music school in Ifs and at the age of twelve went to the conservatoire in Caen to study the cello. Later she chose singing. She studied musicology and ethnomusicology in Rennes and sang in the chorus of the Opéra de Rennes. In 2008 she entered the Conservatoire de Paris.

Music and breakthrough

In October 2011 she made her debut as a soloist at the Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing as Amina in Bellini's La sonnambula. In 2012 followed Serpetta in La finta giardiniera in Aix-en-Provence and the title role in Lakmé in Montpellier. In 2013 she sang the Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute for the first time, in Lyon, a role she later also sang at the Opéra Bastille in Paris and, in 2017, at the Royal Opera House in London. In 2013 she also sang Soeur Constance in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites. In 2019 she made her debut at Carnegie Hall with French songs by Debussy and his circle.

Influence

In 2013 she became Révélation Artiste Lyrique and in 2015 Artiste lyrique de l'année at the Victoires de la musique classique. An asteroid bears her name. Her light, high voice and her agility make her one of the best-known French sopranos of her generation.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to an aria of the Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute in her performance. Notice the high notes and how precisely she sings the fast figures.
