Rune Carlsson

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Rune Carlsson is a drummer who can be heard on the album One Long String by the trio of the American jazz bassist Red Mitchell. The album was recorded in Paris in 1969 and released on the Mercury label. Besides Mitchell on bass, the Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson plays on it. Carlsson completes the trio on drums.

Music and breakthrough

One Long String contains eight pieces. Mitchell wrote most of them himself, including the title track, Peggy, Undertow and Total Tumult. The album also includes Stella by Starlight, Narbild by F. Sjöström and Pojken I Grottan by Stenson. The Allmusic reviewer calls the record full of energy and daring, with a soulful undertone, and writes that, despite all the technique, the recording retains its focus and its collaborative spirit.

Influence

The album shows how Swedish and American jazz musicians worked together in Europe. Little about Carlsson's later career can be found in the available source. His role on this record is that of the rhythmic engine of a trio in which bass and piano give each other a great deal of space.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the title track One Long String and focus on the drums. Notice how Carlsson supports the interplay between bass and piano without drowning it out.
