Pixinguinha

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Pixinguinha, born Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho in Rio de Janeiro, was a flautist, saxophonist, arranger and composer of choro. In the early 1920s he played for months in Paris with his group Os Oito Batutas. His Carinhoso, which appeared around 1930, became one of the best-loved Brazilian melodies. Later he recorded duets on saxophone with the flautist Benedito Lacerda, in which two melodies constantly play around each other.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Um a Zero: Lacerda's flute plays the melody, and Pixinguinha's saxophone winds a second line around it.
