Chiquinha Gonzaga
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Chiquinha Gonzaga, from Rio de Janeiro, was a pianist, composer and Brazil's first female conductor. She was the first woman to play in the choro group of the flautist Joaquim Callado, and her polka Atraente (1877) became her first great success. For the 1899 carnival she wrote Ó Abre Alas, the first carnival march. Her Corta-Jaca was played in 1914 in the presidential palace, which caused a scandal.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Atraente, a polka with Brazilian swing: the melody seems European, but the accompaniment already sways like choro.
